Ministry of Energy’s Priority: Improving the Business Environment and Increasing Competitiveness in the Power Industry

At the 29th International Conference on Electric Power Distribution Networks, Hamidreza Bagheri, Deputy for Electricity Market at Iran Grid Management Company (IGMC), stated that according to Clause (b) of Article 43 of the Seventh Development Plan, the Ministry of Energy is obliged to improve the business environment and competitiveness of the national power industry by directing a major portion of electricity transactions toward the Iran Energy Exchange.

According to the Public Relations and International Affairs Office, Bagheri highlighted the existing potential of the Iran Energy Exchange for electricity trading and for reducing risks for both buyers and sellers, emphasizing the crucial role of distribution companies in achieving the goals of the Seventh Development Plan.

He added that following the successful participation of transmission and sub-transmission consumers in the Iran Energy Exchange over the past four years, the Ministry of Energy’s focus in the coming years will be on enabling distribution-level consumers and end-users to participate in electricity trading and retail markets through the exchange.

A member of IGMC’s Board of Directors, Bagheri elaborated on the different trading boards and mechanisms available in the Iran Energy Exchange—including conventional power, green power, free market power, and energy efficiency certificates—stressing the importance of expanding retail electricity activities across the distribution network to enable customers with a contracted demand of 30 kilowatts or more to participate in energy exchange and retail transactions.
