Japan Revises Energy Policy to Boost Nuclear Power Amid Rising Electricity Demand from AI and Semiconductor Sectors

In response to increasing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and semiconductor industries, Japan is revising its energy policy to maximize the use of nuclear power. A government-commissioned panel has largely supported a new plan aiming for nuclear energy to supply 20% of Japan's electricity by 2040, up from 8.5% in 2023. The plan also targets expanding renewable energy to 40–50% and reducing coal-fired power to 30–40%. This marks a significant shift from the post-Fukushima phase-out policy, emphasizing energy security and decarbonization goals. However, challenges remain, including restarting reactors and public skepticism.
